30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 1 Reflection

30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 1 Reflection

30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 1 Reflection – What I Finished, Liked, Disliked, and Learned. A productive and, more importantly, fun week! It’s been one week since I started my 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge, and I’m amazed at what I’ve accomplished with just small, consistent bursts of creativity each day. As someone with a busy schedule, finding time for hobbies can be challenging, but this approach has been a game-changer for my sewing practice.

The Challenge Concept

The premise is simple: commit to just 30 minutes of a sewing related activity each day. No more, no less. This time constraint forces me to be focused and intentional with my sewing time while ensuring I make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Want to know more about this fun 30-minute challenge? I’d love for you to check out my blog post 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge where I share all the exciting details!

Week 1 –

30 Minute Sewing Challenge - Week 1 Reflection

Project #1 – Sleep Shorts

For my first project, I chose to make sleep shorts using Simplicity 5205. I wanted to start with something practical that I’d actually use regularly, and these comfortable shorts with delicate eyelet trim fit the bill perfectly.

Day 1 –

I was both excited and a bit nervous as I set my timer for the first official day of my 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge. With my pattern and fabric ready to go, I decided to focus on preparation steps to set myself up for success with these sleep shorts.

Today’s accomplishments –

  • Pressed fabric and pattern tissue
  • Laid out and cut pattern pieces
  • Changed thread color on serger and adjusted tension
  • Serged the leg edges on both fabric pieces

I was surprised by how much I accomplished in just half an hour! Since I was teleworking today, I decided to use my lunch break for sewing time. This approach feels sustainable with my busy schedule while still allowing me to enjoy my creative hobby. Looking forward to tomorrow’s session!

Day 2 –

After a long day, I retreated to my sewing room for my 30 minutes of creative relaxation.

Today I accomplished –

  • Attached the eyelet trim to the shorts’ legs
  • Hemmed both shorts’ legs
  • Stitched inside leg seam of one shorts piece

The eyelet trim added a lovely delicate touch to what would otherwise be plain shorts. This 30-minute approach helps me make more mindful decisions about my projects since I know my time is limited.

I was so focused on my sewing that the timer startled me—30 minutes really flies by when you’re in the zone! Though I wanted to continue, I reminded myself that this challenge is about consistency, not marathon sessions.

I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s session when I can finish the remaining leg seam and start on the waistband. Breaking down a project into manageable chunks is proving to be both productive and satisfying!

Day 3 –

I almost didn’t make it to my sewing room today. After a rough, stressful day, I was tempted to take a break from the challenge. I collapsed on the couch and continued binge-watching The Great British Sewing Bee. But as I watched the contestants work on their projects, motivation struck and I found myself heading to my sewing room! And I’m so glad I did!

What I got done today –

  • Stitched inside leg seam of the remaining shorts piece
  • Stitched the center seam
  • Serged the waist edge
  • Created the waist casing & inserted elastic
  • Stitched waist casing closed
  • Project 1 Complete!!

Well… Once I got into my sewing groove, I was unstoppable! When my 30-minute timer went off, I was almost finished stitching the waist casing. The only steps I had left were to insert elastic and close the casing.

That’s when I decided I had to adjust the challenge “rules.” If I’m in the middle of a step or almost finished with my project, I can continue as long as it doesn’t take more than an additional 15 minutes.

Week 1 of the challenge is off to a great start!!

Now it’s time to select my next project. I have a few items at the top of my “To Make” list.

Project #2 – Dark Green Microsuede A-Line Skirt

For my next project, I’m revisiting an unfinished piece from last year McCalls 3341—a simple lined A-line skirt crafted from gorgeous dark green microsuede.

Day 4 –

Finding My Flow! Today was exactly what I needed after a long workweek. The moment I stepped into my sewing room, I felt a wave of creative energy wash over me. There’s something magical about starting a new project – the possibilities seem endless!

Working with microsuede requires patience and precision. While the fabric is forgiving to sew, I had to be extra careful with pressing. The nap on microsuede can easily burn if the iron is too hot or pressed for too long. I took my time with each step, enjoying the process rather than rushing to finish.

Today’s accomplishments –

  • Completed all darts in the front piece
  • Finished darts in both back pieces
  • Joined back pieces along the center seam
  • Carefully pressed all darts and seams

The microsuede is proving to be a lovely fabric to work with – luxurious to the touch with a beautiful drape. I’m glad I decided to revisit this abandoned project as part of my challenge.

I noticed something interesting today – the timer seems less intimidating now that I’m a few days into the challenge. Rather than feeling restricted by the 30-minute limit, I’m finding it liberating. Knowing I only need to commit to half an hour takes the pressure off and allows me to enjoy the process more fully.

Tomorrow, I’ll work on inserting the zipper and stitching the side seams to connect the front and back pieces. If time allows I’ll begin working on the lining by laying out and cutting the pattern pieces. But as everyone knows plans don’t always go as planned!

Day 5 –

I’ve been binge-watching The Great British Sewing Bee this past week, which has inspired me to improve my sewing technique.

Today I focused my sewing time on ensuring my zipper was properly installed. I used Pellon EZ Steam II 1/4″ to secure the zipper during insertion. This method works exceptionally well for creating even, professional-looking zippers.

I also managed to stitch the side seams, though I ran out of time before pressing them. That will be my first task when I return to my sewing room tomorrow.

Today’s accomplishments –

  • Side seams stitched
  • Zipper inserted

I’m really enjoying the 30-minute time blocks for my sewing. I set my timer, establish a goal for the session, and focus on accomplishing it. If I don’t complete everything, I don’t stress about it—I know I’ll return tomorrow and continue where I left off. I’m also seeing the results of my progress each day.

Day 6 –

I didn’t accomplish quite as much today as I’d hoped, but that’s perfectly fine! The important thing is that I’m making daily progress and moving forward.

What I got done today –

  • Marked the darts and clipped the matching marks
  • Adjusted the pattern length in preparation for cutting the lining
  • Pressed the pattern pieces and lining fabric
  • Cut out the skirt lining
  • Marked the darts and clipped the matching marks

Tomorrow marks the end of my first week, and while I’d love to finish the entire skirt, that’s probably a bit ambitious. I’ll consider it a significant accomplishment if I can complete the lining!

Day 7 –

I’ve been battling a headache all day. I’m trying to motivate myself to go to my sewing room and stitch together the lining for my skirt, but I haven’t been very successful so far. Perhaps I’ll just visit my sewing room to review potential projects and decide what to make next. As long as I spend 30 minutes doing something sewing-related, it counts toward the challenge!

After taking a nice hot shower, I headed to my sewing room. Unfortunately, my headache was so severe that trying to focus became absolutely excruciating. Between my allergies and the weather change, I just couldn’t shake it. I ended up taking a couple of Tylenol PM’s and a Zyrtec, then grabbed a warm cloth and went to bed for the night. Tomorrow is always another day—right?

Week 1 Lessons Learned

This first week taught me several valuable lessons about my sewing practice:

  • Time flies when you’re focused – 30 minutes passes incredibly quickly when you’re completely immersed in your project
  • Preparation matters – Having my materials organized beforehand maximizes productive sewing time
  • Breaking tasks down works – Dividing a project into small, manageable segments makes even complex garments feel approachable
  • Consistency builds momentum – Daily practice, even just 30 minutes, creates steady progress and maintains my excitement for the project

Unexpected Benefits

This challenge has provided benefits beyond just project completion:

  • It’s become a form of stress relief and creative meditation in my day
  • I’m making more thoughtful decisions about my projects due to the time constraint
  • The daily ritual has helped establish a creative routine that fits into my busy schedule
  • I feel a sense of accomplishment every day, not just when a project is complete

Week 1 Reflection

Looking back on Week 1 of the 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge, I’m genuinely proud of what I’ve accomplished. I completed a pair of sleep shorts and made significant progress on my microsuede skirt – all in just seven days of 30-minute sessions. What began as an experiment has transformed into a sustainable practice that I’m excited to continue.

The most valuable takeaway I have from Week 1 of my 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge has been learning to embrace imperfection and progress over perfection. Some days I accomplished more than expected, while others (like Day 7) reminded me that self-care takes precedence. This challenge has shown me that consistency doesn’t mean rigidity – it’s about showing up for your creative practice in whatever capacity you can each day. I’m looking forward to Week 2 and discovering what new lessons await as I continue this journey of bite-sized creativity.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences if you’ve tried similar creative challenges. Have you found ways to incorporate short, consistent practice sessions into your own hobbies? What strategies have worked for you in maintaining creative momentum despite a busy schedule? Feel free to share your own journey in the comments below!

See you next week and Happy Sewing!!!
