30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 3 Reflection

30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 3 Reflection

Welcome to Week 3 of my 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge! This week has been a journey of completion, transition, and new beginnings. I finished my dark green microsuede A-line skirt, celebrated that accomplishment, and embarked on selecting and preparing for my next project – a classic black jacket with white trim that’s been waiting patiently in my stash. Though I encountered a brief but worthwhile interruption for some cherished friend time, I’m discovering that this challenge is teaching me as much about balance and flexibility as it is about sewing discipline. Join me as I reflect on the triumphs, challenges, and insights from this third week of my sewing journey.

The Challenge Concept

The premise is simple: commit to just 30 minutes of a sewing related activity each day. No more, no less. This time constraint forces me to be focused and intentional with my sewing time while ensuring I make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Week 3 –

Week 3

Project #2 – Dark Green Microsuede A-Line Skirt

Week 3 continues with Project #2 —a simple lined A-line skirt crafted from gorgeous dark green microsuede.

Day 15 –

I’m back into the swing of things today! Despite some setbacks, I’m not a quitter!

What I accomplished –

  • Completed hand stitching the skirt hem
Week 3

I never realized how time-consuming hand-stitching could be! The full 30 minutes went into finishing the hem.

Day 16 –

I finally finished my skirt! Though challenging and occasionally frustrating, I persevered. I can’t wait to wear it!

Week 3

Today I –

  • Tacked the lining at the zipper
  • Thoroughly pressed my skirt

I’m thrilled with how my skirt turned out! After struggling with various techniques, seeing the completed project gives me such satisfaction.

The dark green color is exactly what I envisioned, and the A-line silhouette is flattering and classic.

The lining adds both a professional finish and comfort. I especially like how clean the zipper looks now that I’ve tacked the lining. Thorough pressing really makes a difference in the final appearance. It’s amazing how much more polished a garment looks after proper pressing.

This project taught me about the importance of patience with hand finishing. Even though some parts were challenging, the result was worth the effort!

Tomorrow I’ll decide on Project #3!

Day 17 –

Today I focused on straightening up my sewing space rather than sewing. I prefer having a “clean slate” before starting a new project. When my space is tidy and organized, I feel more inspired to begin something new.

After cleaning up, I selected my next project. The decision came easily! Last December, I made a black skirt from my stash and had planned to create a matching jacket at the same time. Life had other plans, though, and the jacket remained unmade. This is perfect timing now, as the jacket has been in my project stash for years and aligns perfectly with my “Sew My Stash September 2025” challenge!

Week 3

Project #3 – Butterick 5066 – Black Lined Jacket with White Trim and Pearl Buttons

I love this pattern for its elegant Chanel-inspired style!

Day 18 –

Though eager to cut the jacket pieces from my fabric immediately, I decided to use muslin first to confirm the fit. According to pattern sizing, I’m a size 10. However, I cut the pattern pieces in size 8 years ago when I first got the pattern because I was a size 8 then. Since the design has a boxy fit, the size 8 might still work—which is why I’m creating a mock-up. I’ve decided to skip the sleeves since I’m confident they’ll fit properly.

Today I –

  • Pressed front, side and back jacket pattern pieces
  • Cut front, side and back jacket pattern pieces from muslin
Week 3

I felt a strong sense of progress today despite just working with muslin. Taking time to properly prepare my mock-up is an investment that will save frustration later. I’m excited to see how the size 8 fits when assembled. Though tempted to skip straight to the beautiful black fabric, my patience with this preparatory step will pay off in the final product.

Before this challenge, I might have rushed through mock-ups or skipped them entirely, eager to work with the “real” fabric. Now I see how these methodical steps are meaningful and contribute significantly to the final quality.

Day 19 –

Today’s sewing session flew by! I was surprised when my timer went off.

Today I –

  • Stitched my mockup and evaluated the jacket fit
  • Pressed the lining and jacket tissue pieces

After assembling the jacket mockup, I found that the size 8 does fit, but I’m concerned it might become too snug once the lining is added. To compensate, I’ll stitch it using a 1/2″ seam allowance instead of the standard 5/8″.

I’m pleased with how much I accomplished in my 30-minute session today! The muslin fitting was valuable, confirming my size concerns and allowing me to make necessary adjustments before cutting into my actual fabric. This small investment of time will save significant frustration later.

Using a slightly smaller seam allowance rather than sizing up entirely feels like a good compromise. It will give me just enough extra room for the lining without losing the silhouette I want. These nuanced decisions make custom sewing so rewarding—I’m creating something that will truly fit me perfectly.

I’m excited to start working with the actual fabric. The black with white trim will create a classic, timeless piece that will coordinate beautifully with the skirt I made in December. I can already envision the finished outfit!

Day 20 & 21 –

I skipped my sewing time for a long-awaited weekend with my best friend from high school! After months of planning, it was wonderful to have her visit. We spent our time thrift shopping, watching favorite movies, and enjoying drinks together. Though I missed my daily sewing session, these friendship moments are precious and deserve priority sometimes. I’ll return to my challenge tomorrow, refreshed and inspired!

Week 3 Reflections

Week 3 has been a journey of completion and transition. Finishing my dark green microsuede skirt brought a profound sense of accomplishment and closure to a project that had its challenges. The satisfaction of seeing the completed garment, with its perfect hem and professionally finished lining, reinforced why I love sewing—the tangible results of creative effort.

The transition to preparing for my next project—the black jacket with white trim—has been methodical and thoughtful. I’m finding that this challenge is teaching me to value preparation steps like mockups and fitting adjustments that I might have rushed through before. There’s a mindfulness that comes with limiting myself to 30 minutes; I’m more deliberate about how I use that time.

Perhaps most importantly, this week showed me that balance is essential. Taking time away from sewing for my friend’s visit wasn’t a failure but rather a healthy integration of sewing into my broader life. The challenge isn’t meant to become an obligation that overshadows other joys but rather a framework that helps me maintain consistent progress without overwhelming other priorities.

As I move forward with my jacket project, I’m carrying this sense of balance, preparation, and satisfaction in the process as much as the product. The challenge is evolving from simply “making time to sew” to “developing a sustainable, joyful sewing practice” that fits harmoniously into my life.

Mindset Shifts

I’ve shifted from viewing my sewing time as separate from “real life” to seeing it as an integrated part of a balanced lifestyle. This challenge is teaching me that consistency doesn’t require sacrificing other important aspects of life, but rather thoughtfully integrating my creative practice into my daily rhythms.

Looking Ahead

As I look ahead to Week 4, I’m excited to dive into constructing my black jacket with white trim. With the muslin fitting complete and adjustments planned, I’m ready to cut into my actual fabric and begin assembling this classic piece. My goals include:

  • Cutting all jacket pieces from both the main fabric and lining
  • Beginning the assembly process with a focus on precision
  • Preparing the white trim details that will give this jacket its distinctive character
  • Working with the specialty buttons to enhance the design

I anticipate Week 4 may present challenges with the more detailed construction elements, particularly working with the trim and creating clean finishes where the lining meets the outer fabric. However, I’m confident that my 30-minute approach will help me tackle these elements methodically without feeling overwhelmed.

I’m also looking forward to maintaining the balance I discovered this week—allowing my sewing practice to be consistent while still flexing when life’s other joys and responsibilities need attention. This sustainable approach feels like the true success of this challenge beyond the garments themselves.

The jacket represents a perfect continuation of my stash-busting efforts, and I’m particularly motivated by how it will pair with my previously completed black skirt. Having a coordinated outfit emerge from this challenge will be especially rewarding!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences if you’ve tried similar creative challenges. Have you found ways to incorporate short, consistent practice sessions into your own hobbies? What strategies have worked for you in maintaining creative momentum despite a busy schedule? Feel free to share your own journey in the comments below!

See you next week and Happy Sewing!!!
