30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge – Week 5 Reflection
Welcome to my Week 5 reflections for the 30 Minutes a Day Sewing Challenge! Week 5 was extremely brief—just two days in total. I wasn’t able to complete my jacket for The Lined Jacket Contest without dedicating additional sewing time. But that’s on me! I really should have planned my project timeline better!
In this reflection, I’ll share my daily progress, challenges faced, and how this time constraint actually helped me develop a more balanced approach to sewing. While I couldn’t complete the jacket using only the 30-minute sessions, this experience ignited my enthusiasm for daily sewing and helped me establish a consistent creative routine.
Let’s dive into the details of my week and see what I accomplished in those precious 30-minute daily sessions!
The Challenge Concept
The premise is simple: commit to just 30 minutes of a sewing related activity each day. No more, no less. This time constraint forces me to be focused and intentional with my sewing time while ensuring I make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Week 5 –

Project #3 – Butterick 5066 – an elegant Chanel-inspired Jacket
Week 5 continues with Project #3 — an elegant Chanel-inspired jacket Black Lined Jacket with White Trim and Pearl Buttons
Day 29 –
Precision sewing definitely takes a lot more time than I realized! It’s been YEARS since I’ve worked on such a detailed garment. For the past several years, I’ve mostly sewn quick and easy projects. Last year I participated in the 52 Week Sewing Challenge 2024 and made quite a few garments—some successful and others not so much. None of those projects were complicated as this jacket!
Today I –
- Stitched the facing to jacket
- Trimmed and clipped seams
- Pressed facing to inside of jacket

I actually feel like I accomplished more during this session than in several of my previous ones, which is really encouraging. Though I still have a significant amount of work before the jacket is complete, I’m committed to finishing it for the contest submission—I’ve even decided to take a day off work to ensure I have enough time!
Day 30 –
Final day of my 30 Minute a Day Sewing Challenge – September 2025! As you can see, I still haven’t attached the pockets yet. They require hand sewing, and we all know how much I “love” hand stitching!

What I accomplished today:
- Re-pressed facing for a crisp finish
- Ease stitched the sleeve heads
- Stitched sleeve seams & pressed
I know I wouldn’t be able to complete my jacket in the last 30-minute session of the month, and that’s okay. I’ll finish it using the additional sewing time I planned by taking today off from work.
Today marks the culmination of a month-long journey dedicated to consistent, daily sewing practice. Looking back on these thirty days, I’m amazed at how much I’ve accomplished by committing to just half an hour each day. While this final session brings my official challenge to a close, the habits and discipline I’ve developed will continue to influence my sewing practice moving forward.
Week 5 Reflections
Week 5 was incredibly brief but remarkably revealing. Despite only consisting of two days, this final stretch of the challenge taught me valuable lessons about project planning, time management, and the benefits of consistent creative practice.
First, I learned that precision sewing takes significantly more time than I anticipated. My Chanel-inspired jacket was ambitious for 30-minute sessions, requiring careful attention to detail at every step. While I couldn’t complete it within the challenge framework, I’m proud of the progress made and comfortable with extending the timeline.
The time constraint actually helped sharpen my focus. Knowing I only had 30 minutes forced me to plan each session meticulously, breaking down complex tasks into manageable segments. This approach prevented overwhelm and kept me moving forward consistently, even with a challenging project.
Perhaps most importantly, these final two days confirmed that I’ve established a sustainable sewing habit. The daily 30-minute commitment has become a natural part of my routine rather than something I need to force. I look forward to my sewing time and find myself mentally planning the next session throughout the day.
While I initially worried about the “failure” of not completing my jacket within the challenge period, I’ve come to recognize that the true purpose wasn’t project completion but habit formation. In that regard, Week 5 was the perfect culmination of a successful month-long journey.
Mindset Shifts
One of the most significant outcomes of this challenge has been the profound shift in my mindset about sewing and creative practice in general. Before starting, I viewed sewing as an all-or-nothing activity that required large blocks of time to be worthwhile. Now, I understand the power of consistent, focused effort, even in small increments.
I’ve moved away from perfectionism toward progress. Rather than waiting for “perfect” conditions or being discouraged by mistakes, I’ve learned to embrace the process and appreciate incremental improvements. This shift has made sewing more enjoyable and less stressful.
The challenge has also transformed how I view time management. I’ve discovered that I don’t need vast stretches of uninterrupted time to pursue my creative passions. By prioritizing even brief sessions, I’ve proven to myself that consistent practice yields meaningful results. This realization has spilled over into other areas of my life, encouraging me to make better use of small pockets of time throughout my day.
Perhaps most importantly, I’ve reconnected with the joy of creating. When time is limited, you focus on what matters most—the process itself rather than just the end product. This shift from outcome-focused to process-oriented thinking has deepened my appreciation for sewing as a craft and creative outlet.
Looking Ahead
As I look ahead beyond this 30-day challenge, I’m excited to build upon the foundation I’ve established. While the official challenge has concluded, I plan to continue with daily sewing sessions whenever possible. The structure and discipline have been transformative for my creative practice, and I don’t want to lose that momentum.
First, I’ll complete my Chanel-inspired jacket for The Lined Jacket Contest. This project has stretched my skills and reminded me how rewarding complex garment construction can be. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished piece and wearing it proudly, knowing it represents not just technical skill but also the consistency of my new sewing practice.
Moving forward, I plan to maintain a balance between ambitious projects and quicker makes. I’ve learned that both have value—complex projects develop technical skills and patience, while simpler ones provide the satisfaction of completion and immediate gratification. This balance will keep my sewing practice sustainable and enjoyable.
I also want to expand my skills by taking on new techniques with each project. The focused nature of 30-minute sessions is perfect for skill building, allowing me to tackle challenging elements one step at a time without feeling overwhelmed. I’ve already identified several techniques I’d like to master in upcoming projects.
This challenge may be ending, but it feels more like a beginning—the start of a more intentional, joyful, and productive relationship with my sewing practice. I’m grateful for the lessons learned and excited about the creative journey ahead!
