Welcome to Week 12 – Scraplift a Layout Design

When I hit a creative block, I turn to scraplifting for inspiration. By finding an existing layout design and adapting it for my own scrapbook page, I can quickly jumpstart my creativity. The key is maintaining the original structural elements while adding my personal touches. This approach lets me explore new design possibilities without the intimidation of facing a blank page.

Scraplifting reminds us that creativity doesn’t always require starting from scratch—building upon existing design principles can spark fresh inspiration and help develop your unique artistic voice.

Creative Memory Keeping - Challenge 12

I drew inspiration from Charla Campbell’s “Matt” layout featured in Creative Keepsakes Scrapbook Tips & Techniques. What caught my eye was her clever use of a tag to showcase a photo.

Challenge –

Find a layout with a shape that inspires you and challenge yourself to scraplift it for your own creation.

Tips for This Challenge –

  • Focus on structure, not content: Remember, you’re primarily adapting the layout design rather than copying the theme or subject matter. Pay attention to the arrangement of elements.
  • Analyze the original design: Take time to understand why the original layout works – look at proportions, spacing, and visual hierarchy.
  • Make it your own: Don’t be afraid to modify the layout to suit your photos and story. Adapt the design to fit your personal style.
  • Credit your inspiration: If you share your work online, it’s good practice to acknowledge the original creator whose design inspired yours.

My Project –

Lately, I’ve been focusing on my Project Life, so for this challenge I created a 6″ × 4″ pocket page card.

One morning when I was out in my yard I saw I bubble bee flittering from morning glory to morning glory. Watching him land on a flower then crawl inside it so the only part I saw was his cute fat little butt.

Products Used –

  • Cardstock –
    • Bo Bunny – Double Dot Designs – Powder Blue Stripes
    • White – from my stash
  • Cricut & Design Space – tag image
  • Twine – Brother & Sister
  • Paper Flower & Brad – from my stash
  • Decorating Chalks & Small Applicator – Lime Green
  • Date Stamp & StazOn Ink – Black

Reflections from the Craft Table

Creative Memory Keeping – Challenge 12 was a delightful adventure in adapting someone else’s design principles to my own creative work. Scraplifting the layout shape pushed me to think differently about how I organize elements on my pocket cards. The tag format provided a perfect frame for highlighting my bumblebee photo while maintaining visual interest.

This challenge reminded me that creativity doesn’t always mean starting from zero. Sometimes, building upon existing design principles can lead to fresh inspiration and help develop our own unique artistic voice. I’ll definitely keep scraplifting in my creative toolkit going forward!

There’s no right or wrong approach to this challenge—the goal is simply to explore creative ways to incorporate meaningful text into your memory keeping projects. Have fun experimenting with different techniques and discovering your unique style!
