Welcome to Week 3 – Customize a Ribbon Border

Memory keeping is more than just photos—it’s about capturing the essence of your stories through meaningful words. This week’s 52 Weeks of Creative Memory Keeping – Challenge 3 focuses on ribbon.
No matter how you twist it or what you add to it ribbon is a terrific page border that can be attached in many creative ways: with eyelets, brads, staples, embroidery floss, and more.
Creative Memory Keeping – Challenge 3
Ribbon borders are versatile decorative elements that can:
- Provide a perfect opportunity for personalization
- Frame your photos and journaling beautifully
- Add texture and dimension to flat layouts
- Introduce color accents that complement your theme
- Create visual flow and guide the viewer’s eye
Tips for This Challenge
Choose Your Ribbon
Select ribbons that complement your layout’s color scheme and theme. Consider the texture, width, and pattern. Satin ribbons create elegance, while burlap or twine offer a rustic feel. Mixing different ribbons can create wonderful textural interest.
Plan Your Border Design
Before adhering anything, play with the arrangement. You might try:
- Ribbon “corners” instead of full borders
- A single straight ribbon border
- Layered ribbons of different widths
- Woven ribbon patterns
- Gathered or pleated ribbons for volume
Customize Your Ribbon
This is where creativity shines! Try these customization ideas:
- Stamp patterns or words onto plain ribbons
- Add heat embossing for glossy raised designs
- Sew tiny beads or sequins along the edges
- Distress with ink, paint, or tea/coffee for an aged look
- Create tiny bows or rosettes to place at intervals
- Add meaningful charms that tie into your memory theme
Creative Variations to Try
Photo Frame Ribbon Border
Create a complete frame around a special photo using ribbon. Miter the corners for a clean, professional look, or create decorative corners with small ribbon bows.
Scalloped Ribbon Edge
Form a scalloped edge by creating loops with your ribbon and securing each loop individually. This creates a soft, feminine border perfect for baby or wedding layouts.
Woven Ribbon Grid
For a more elaborate design, try weaving ribbons in a grid pattern to create a backdrop for your photos or journaling.
Ribbon Journaling Lines
Use thin ribbons as guidelines for your handwritten journaling, then write directly on your page above each ribbon line.
My Projects
For this challenge, I created a full-page layout and a 6″ × 4″ pocket page card.
For this page, I wanted to share my love of flowers. I used several miscellaneous ribbons from my stash.
To make the flower ribbon “pop,” I added small, color-coordinating brads to the center of each flower.

For this 6 x 4 card, I celebrate one of my “oasis” in my backyard. I’ve created several of these oasis to spend relaxing time reading and enjoying the outdoors.
For this card, I created my own “ribbon” by repeating book-related stamps on cardstock.
