Welcome to Week 4 – Make Your Own Chipboard Accents

Memory keeping is more than just photos—it’s about capturing the essence of your stories through meaningful words. This week’s 52 Weeks of Creative Memory Keeping – Challenge 4 focuses on creating your own chipboard accents to make your page “pop.”
Creative Memory Keeping – Challenge 4
Chipboard is an excellent way to add a personal touch to your memory keeping pages and Pocket Page cards. Creating your own chipboard accents gives your projects a unique, custom look.
Steps:
- Draw or trace your desired shape onto plain chipboard. Cut out the accent using scissors or a craft knife. Or use a Cricut or Silhouette to cut an image out of chipboard,
- Paint or color your shape with appealing colors.
- Add embellishments – buttons, stickers, jewels, or anything else that enhances your design.
Tips for This Challenge –
- Source chipboard creatively: Look beyond craft store options – cereal boxes, packaging, and cardboard can all be repurposed into custom chipboard.
- Layer for dimension: Stack multiple chipboard pieces for dramatic 3D effects, perfect for album covers or special layouts.
- Seal your work: Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or clear acrylic sealer to protect painted or decorated chipboard from wear.
- Create templates: Save successful designs as templates for future projects to maintain consistency across your albums.
Design Ideas –
- Mix textures: Combine chipboard with fabric, twine, or textured papers for interesting tactile contrasts.
- Embrace imperfections: Hand-cut chipboard often has a charming, artisanal quality that adds character to your memory keeping.
- Try heat embossing: Apply embossing ink and powder to chipboard, then heat to create glossy, raised designs that catch the light.
- Use as masks: Chipboard pieces make excellent stencils for ink sprays, creating coordinating background patterns.
Remember, chipboard accents don’t need to be complicated to make an impact. Even simple shapes with minimal embellishment can dramatically enhance your memory keeping projects!
Journaling Prompts –
Chipboard elements can do more than just decorate your pages—they can actively inspire your storytelling and journaling. Here are creative ways to use chipboard as journaling prompts:
- Shape-inspired storytelling: Cut chipboard into shapes that represent key themes (hearts, stars, arrows) and use each shape to prompt different aspects of your story.
- Interactive elements: Create chipboard spinners, sliders, or flip elements that reveal different journaling questions when manipulated.
- Timeline markers: Use chipboard as timeline markers with prompts that encourage you to reflect on different periods of your life or stages of an event.
- Question frames: Cut chipboard into frame shapes with journaling questions written around the edges, designed to surround meaningful photos.
- Pocket prompts: Create chipboard tags with journaling prompts that slide into pockets, allowing you to switch them out as needed.
Incorporating these chipboard journaling prompts into your memory keeping not only adds visual interest to your pages but also ensures your storytelling remains rich and meaningful, capturing the emotions and details that might otherwise be forgotten.
My Project –
Week 4 of my 52 Weeks of Creative Memory Keeping journey, I decided to focus on a Pocket Page card for my Project Life album. This time, inspiration struck from my latest life milestone—welcoming a 2018 dark cherry red Ford Edge (playfully named “Cherry Bomb”) into my world. What better way to commemorate this new adventure than by crafting a one-of-a-kind chipboard arrow to point the way to my story?
The foundation for my arrow came from an unexpected source – a sturdy section of a CranEnergy carton, upcycled as thin chipboard.

With my trusty Cricut Maker 3 and Design Space, I designed and cut out a crisp arrow shape that would become the star of my card.
To transform the raw chipboard, I painted the brown side with Apple Barrel Matte White, letting it dry thoroughly for a clean, bright base.

Once set, I reached for my Cricut Ultimate Fine Point Pen in Very Berry, sketching faux stitching around the arrow’s edge to add playful dimension and handcrafted flair.
Next came a stamped detail to capture the spirit of the moment—a bold “This Way to Fun” arrow front and center, stamped using Jet Black StazOn ink. The message couldn’t have been more fitting for the journey “Cherry Bomb” was about to embark on with me.
Inventive Embellishments -Turning Limitations into Creative Triumphs
I envisioned a line of mini black brads accenting the arrow’s end, but my stash only offered silver ones. Refusing to let this minor setback slow me down, I colored three silver mini brads with a Black Sharpie Creative Marker. Once dry, these transformed brads were attached using the Karen Foster Clikit, providing the perfect finishing touch to my arrow embellishment.
The Adventure Ticket – A Handmade Keepsake
No adventure story is complete without a ticket, so I turned to the Documenter Tickets stamp set by Goldenrod Co for Studio Calico. Stamping the background with a Classic Stampin’ Up Mini Stamp in Bashful Blue, I layered on a crisp ticket outline in Jet Black StazOn. With phrases like “time for an extraordinary adventure,” “Admit Two,” and quirky numbers and letters, my ticket came alive as a tangible invitation to new memories. I trimmed it to mimic the perforation of a real ticket, adding authenticity to the effect.
Journaling with a Personal Touch
To record my story, I cut a square of white cardstock and framed it with more faux stitching in Very Berry, carrying the motif throughout the card. Using my computer, I typed and printed my journaling onto an Avery Clear Shipping label, ensuring neatness and clarity, then adhered it onto the stitched square—an easy way to combine digital precision with handmade charm.
Bringing It All Together

The backdrop for my 6 x 4 Pocket Page card was a rectangle of patterned scrapbook paper from my ever-growing stash. I carefully layered my arrow, adventure ticket, and journaling, arranging each piece to tell a coherent and visually pleasing story. As a final detail, I stamped the date at the bottom, marking this milestone for posterity.
