Welcome to Challenge 5 – Embellish a Floral Accent

Flowers are versatile embellishments that can enhance virtually any memory keeping project, regardless of theme or subject matter. They add a touch of natural beauty, color, and texture to your pages. But why stop at basic floral elements when you can transform them into unique, eye-catching focal points?

Challenge –

Find a place for a flower accent on your page or card. But add a bit of “pop” to your floral accent by embellishing the center of your flower – use a colorful brad, a tiny button with a thread bow or a circle of contrasting pattern paper. Let your imagination run wild!

Why Embellish Your Flowers?

  • Adds dimension and visual interest to your layouts
  • Creates one-of-a-kind embellishments that reflect your personal style
  • Provides opportunity to use up small embellishments from your stash
  • Enhances the theme or story of your page
  • Draws attention to important photos or journaling

Creative Ideas for Flower Centers

For Vintage Themes

  • Antique buttons or brads
  • Tiny watch faces or clock embellishments
  • Aged paper circles with text
  • Vintage rhinestones or pearls
  • Small sepia photo cutouts

For Modern Layouts

  • Geometric pattern paper centers
  • Bright, contrasting enamel dots
  • Metallic sequins or confetti
  • Small sentiment stickers
  • Tiny chipboard shapes

For Nature Themes

  • Miniature pinecones or acorns
  • Dried herb centers
  • Textured burlap circles
  • Small shells or pebbles
  • Seed bead clusters

Tips for This Challenge –

  • Consider the scale of your flower embellishment when choosing a center element – the center should enhance, not overwhelm the flower
  • Don’t be afraid to mix materials – combining fabric flowers with paper, metal, or plastic centers creates interesting textural contrasts
  • Use your embellished flowers strategically to guide the viewer’s eye to important photos or journaling on your layout
  • Look beyond traditional crafting supplies – buttons from old clothing, tiny charms from broken jewelry, or small hardware items can make unique flower centers
  • Secure dimensional centers carefully with strong adhesives, brads, or stitching to ensure they don’t fall off over time

My Projects –

For this challenge, I created a 6″ × 4″ pocket page card.

For this week’s challenge, I created a 6 x 4 pocket card celebrating a special garden feature – a flower planter with a solar fountain. I wanted to capture the joy of this outdoor element that brings both beauty and tranquility to my space.

Creative Memory Keeping - Challenge 5

Since I wanted the focus to be on the story I kept my design pretty basic. I started with patterned paper as my base, selecting a design that complemented the outdoor garden theme. I used some pre-made flower embellishments from my crafting stash. The softness and dimension added wonderful texture to the pocket card.

For the embellished centers, I chose a bright green brad that added a pop of color while securing the flower firmly to the card. The contrast between the paper flower petals and the structured metal brads created visual interest and dimension that catches the eye – reminiscent of how the green leaves of the flowers in the fountain is a vivid contrast with the vibrant colors of the flowers.

Products Used –

  • Echo Park Paper – Hello Spring Floral
  • White Cardstock
  • Bright green mini brad
  • Paper flowers from stash

There’s no right or wrong approach to this challenge—the goal is simply to explore creative ways to incorporate meaningful text into your memory keeping projects. Have fun experimenting with different techniques and discovering your unique style!
