Sewing a Aromatherapy Sleep Mask
Do you often find it hard to fall asleep in a bright room? Or maybe you’re someone who needs to sleep during the day? Or are you like me and suffer from a lot of headaches and migraines? If so, then this sleep mask is the perfect solution for you! Not only does it block out light, but it also help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. An aromatherapy sleep mask filled with lavender that can be heated or cooled is perfect for pain relief! In this post, I’ll show you how to sew your very own aromatherapy sleep mask.
Choosing Your Fabric
The first step in making a sleep mask is to choose the right fabric. You’ll want to select a soft, breathable fabric that won’t irritate your skin. Cotton, silk, and satin are all great choices. You’ll also want to select a lining fabric that’s dark in color to block out as much light as possible.
Materials
- 9″ x 5″ scraps of fabric, lining and flannel
- 1 1/2 yds – 1/2″ wide ribbon
- 1 cup white rice
- 1 tbsp lavender
- Basic Sewing Supplies
- Sleep Mask Pattern
Sewing Your Sleep Mask
Once you have your fabric cut out, it’s time to start sewing.
Lay main fabric and lining fabric on cutting board with right sides together with the flannel on top. Place the mask pattern and cut out all the layers.
Mark main fabric for ribbon placement.
Pin ribbon at markings and secure ends.
Lay lining fabric right side down with flannel on top. Pin layers together. Sew around the edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a small gap at the top for turning. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam to secure it in place.
Clip curves, being careful not to clip seam.
Turn your mask right side out through the gap you left at the top. Fold the edges of the gap inward and press mask.
Fill the mask with dried lavender and rice. Be careful not to overfill.
Pin opening in top and carefully topstitch around the mask.
Now that you know how to sew your own sleep mask, you’ll never have to struggle with getting a good night’s sleep again. Not only is this a fun and easy project, but it’s also a great way to customize your mask to fit your personal style. So go ahead and get sewing!
Embellishments
If you want to add a little personality to your sleep mask, you can always add embellishments. Some ideas include adding lace or ribbon around the edges, sewing on sequins or beads, or even embroidering your name or a cute design onto the front of the mask. Just be sure to add any embellishments before you sew the fabric together.
Tips and Tricks
Here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind when making your sleep mask:
- Be sure to use a sharp needle when sewing your mask. A dull needle can cause the fabric to bunch or snag.
- If you’re having trouble turning your sleep mask right side out, try using a chopstick or pencil to gently push the fabric through the gap being careful not to push through the fabric.
- When topstitching push rice towards the inside of the mask to stitch smoothly.
