Capturing Life Through Photos with Project Life

Capturing Life Through Photos with Project Life

Life moves fast, doesn’t it? One day you’re sipping coffee, the next you’re celebrating a birthday, and before you know it, the year’s gone. That’s why photo journaling is such a gift—it lets you pause, reflect, and hold onto those little moments that make life beautiful. And if you’ve been looking for a simple, fun way to do this, let me introduce you to Project Life 2026.

Whether you’re brand new to memory keeping or just want a system that’s easy to stick with, this post will walk you through what Project Life is, how to stay consistent, and the different ways you can make it your own. Plus, I’ll share some tips for monthly layouts (my favorite!) and wrap it up with a little inspiration to get you started.

What Exactly Is Project Life?

Project Life

Think of Project Life as scrapbooking’s laid-back cousin. It was created by Becky Higgins to make memory keeping simple and stress-free. No fancy tools, no hours of cutting and gluing—just a straightforward system that focuses on your photos and stories.

Here’s what makes it awesome –

  • Pocket Pages – These are page protectors with little slots for photos and journaling cards.
  • Pocket Cards – There are so many great sources for pocket cards! Popular options include Ali Edwards’ Stories by the Month kits, In a Creative Bubble, and Cocoa Daisy. You can also design your own—whether you prefer a clean, minimalist look or want to use them as a canvas for creative expression on a smaller scale, the choice is yours.
  • Flexibility – You can go weekly, monthly, or even create themed albums. It’s totally up to you!

The best part? You don’t need to be a crafting pro. If you can slip a photo into a pocket and jot down a memory, you’re good to go.

How to Stay Consistent All Year

Let’s be real—starting is easy, but keeping up? That’s the challenge. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you stick with it.

Pick a Schedule That Works for You

Weekly spreads are great, but if that feels overwhelming, monthly layouts are a lifesaver. Less pressure, more fun.

Batch Your Tasks

  • Photo Picking – Set aside one day a month to choose your favorites.
  • Printing – Do it in bulk—it saves time and money.
  • Assembly – Block out an hour to slip everything into pockets. Done!

Keep Supplies Handy

A little “Project Life corner” in your home makes it easy to dive in whenever you have a few minutes.

Use Apps for Organization

Google Photos or Lightroom can help you sort by month so you’re not scrolling endlessly.

Give Yourself Grace

Got behind? No big deal. Just pick up where you left off. This is about joy, not perfection.

Digital or Physical? You’ve Got Options!

One of the coolest things about Project Life is that you can choose the format that fits your lifestyle:

Physical Albums
  – Pros: Tangible, interactive, and perfect for hands-on creativity.
  – Cons: Takes up space and needs supplies.

Digital Albums
  – Pros: Portable, easy to share online, and no printing required.
  – Cons: Less tactile, and you’ll need software or apps.

Hybrid
Do a mix! Create digital layouts and print them as photo books. Sleek and space-saving.

Weekly vs. Monthly: Which Is Best?

Weekly Spreads – Great if you love capturing everyday details and have lots of photos.
Monthly Spreads – Perfect for a big-picture view without the pressure. Highlight major events, favorite snapshots, and jot down key memories.

I’m doing monthly, here’s my favorite tip – Keep a “Highlights” list in your phone. At the end of the month, you’ll have all the little details ready for your spread.

Quick Starter Checklist

  • Choose your format: Physical, Digital, or Hybrid
  • Pick your schedule: Weekly or Monthly
  • Gather your supplies: Album, pocket pages, journaling cards, pens
  • Organize your photos: Sort by month or event
  • Create a “Highlights” list for each month
  • Block out time: Even 30 minutes can make a big difference
  • Start with January and keep going—progress over perfection!

Creative Prompts for Your Monthly Spreads

  • Favorite Photo of the Month – The one that makes you smile every time.
  • Song of the Month – What were you listening to on repeat?
  • Quote or Saying – Something inspiring or funny you heard.
  • Current Obsession – A TV show, hobby, or snack you couldn’t get enough of.
  • Highlight Moment – The best thing that happened this month.
  • Weather Snapshot – Was it snowy, sunny, or rainy? Add a photo or note.
  • Gratitude List – Three things you’re thankful for this month.
  • Unexpected Joy – A surprise that made your day.
  • Favorite Meal or Recipe – Snap a pic or jot down what you loved eating.
  • Looking Ahead – One thing you’re excited about next month.

Repeating Prompts to Keep Your Album Consistent

I love using a few prompts that repeat every month—they make my Project Life album feel cohesive and easy to keep up with. Here are the photo and journaling prompts I include each month:

Beginning of the Month

  • A photo of my neighborhood
  • A photo of the front of my house
  • A screenshot of my monthly iPhone activity challenge
  • Weather screenshot
  • A ‘This Is Us’ card to capture Litten, Tigger & me

Mid-Month

  • Weather update screenshot
  • A ‘Currently’ card (watching, eating, reading, grateful for, etc.)

End of the Month

  • Completed activity challenge
  • An ‘Around Here’ card with 4 – 5 photos through the month
  • Journaling the Month Highlights
  • Shows & Movies watched
  • Books read

During the Month

  • A ‘Where I Stand’ photo – usually when I’m doing something special
  • A selfie to capture me in a random moment

Your Story, Your Way

Here’s the thing: Project Life isn’t about creating a perfect album—it’s about telling your stories. Whether your pages are simple or bursting with color, what matters is that they make you smile. So embrace the process, celebrate the imperfections, and remember: every photo is a piece of your life worth keeping.

Start Today—Your Memories Deserve It!

Don’t wait for the “perfect time.” Grab your favorite photos, pick a format that feels right, and start documenting your journey. A year from now, you’ll have a beautiful collection of memories to look back on—and trust me, you’ll be so glad you did.

2026 is full of stories waiting to be told! Share your Project Life goals and prompts in the comments below. I’d love to hear your creative plans!
