Cupcakes In a Jar
Today is Vanilla Cupcake Day. Let’s Celebrate with Cupcakes in a Jar!
I love cake but baking a whole cake for just me ends up being a waste. I can’t eat a whole cake!! Especially before it goes bad.
Which is one reason I love cupcakes. But I still can’t eat twelve cupcakes before they go bad.
I’ve read that cakes can be frozen but freezing half a cake still seems wasteful. I know I won’t eat even a half a cake before it goes bad. Freezing cupcakes would work but finding a container large enough to hold the cupcakes but not take up a lot of real estate in the freezer became complicated.
So how did I solve my dilemma?
By baking cupcakes in a jar! The cupcakes are individually sealed and can be stored in the freezer by sticking the jar in whatever available space that can be found. Win-win!!
I used a box cake mix and pre-made buttercream frosting. This works with made from scratch cakes and frosting too! Great to try out that recipe you’ve been wanting to make and save your treat for a special occasion.
I’ve made cupcakes in a jar several times and have learned some tips –
One box of cake mix makes 12 cupcakes.
For perfect sized cupcakes I used half-pint wide mouth jelly mason jars.
Spray the insides of the jelly jars with baking spray to help with clean up after jar is empty.
Bake the cupcakes in a sheet pan with a silicone mat on the bottom to prevent the jars from sliding.
Fill the jars only 1/4 full to prevent cake from overflowing the top as it bakes and to make sure you have plenty of room for the frosting.
I use a Batter Dispenser to help control portion and minimize mess.
Allow jars to cool completely before icing. Your icing will melt and won’t look pretty.
The easiest way to frost is to use a cake decorating disposable bag and piping tip.
Decorate your jars with ribbon and attach a spoon to the jar.
To freeze just stack the jars in your freezer where you have room. When ready to eat pull jars out of the freezer and allow to sit at room temperature for 2 – 3 hours. A Cupcake in a Jar is the perfect dessert for your lunchbox.
Cupcakes in a Jar is a fun alternative to regular cupcakes for a festive gathering. A birthday party, a picnic or even for everyday lunch. They are easy to pack and carry.
