DIY 2 x 6 FALL Pumpkins

Fall is the time of year when we start thinking about decorating our homes with all the beautiful fall colors. One of the most popular decorations for this season is pumpkins. However, instead of buying plastic or foam pumpkins, why not try making ones out of 2 x 6 boards? These DIY pumpkins are easy to make, customizable, and will last for years to come.

Let’s Do This!!

Supplies & Tools Needed –

  • 4 – 2 x 6 boards cut in 8”, 9”, 10” & 11” lengths
  • Sandpaper
  • Black, White, Medium Brown & Dark Brown chalk paint
  • Paint brushes
  • 3” Wood Letters – F, A, L, L
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • 4 – Doll Pins
  • Hack Saw
  • Drill & drill bit
  • Brad nail gun & 2” brad nails or hammer & brad nails
  • Ribbon

Instructions –

Sand the edges of the boards to make them smooth. This step is important to prevent any splinters.

Fall Pumpkins

Paint each board with white chalk paint. Let dry or use a heat gun for faster drying time.

Paint letters using black chalk paint. Touch up where needed using small paint brush. Let dry.

Distress letters by sanding edges lightly with a sanding block.

Distress boards with dark brown chalk paint using a foam brush. Let dry.

Locate center of the top of each board and mark.

Drill a hole approximately 1/2” to 3/4” deep.

Cut doll pins to approximately 3” lengths with a hack saw. Sand bottom.

Paint doll pins with medium brown paint. Let dry.

Super glue letters to the center front of each board.

Hot glue doll pins into drilled holes. Let set.

Fall Pumpkins

Line boards up overlapping edges slightly. Place a line of super glue along the edge of each board and glue to next one. Nail boards together.

Tie a bow and hot glue to stem.

Display!

Optional: You can also add leaves or other decorations to the top of the pumpkin to give it a more personalized look. You can use any type of decoration that you like, such as fabric leaves or artificial flowers.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you do not have access to a saw, you can ask your local hardware store to cut the boards for you.
  • You can use different colors of paint to create a unique and personalized look for your pumpkins.
  • To make the pumpkin look more realistic, you can add small details such as lines or curves to the boards before painting them.

Materials
