DIY “Life Is Better With a Dog!” Round Sign
Welcome to my crafting corner! Today I’m sharing how I made this adorable round wooden sign that perfectly captures how much joy our furry friends bring to our lives. This Life Is Better With A Dog! round sign is simple enough for beginners but looks professionally made when finished!
My baby boy Tigger is such a blessing to me that I wanted to create a sign displaying the joy he’s brought into my life. This project also serves as inspiration for others who want to show their love for their furbabies.
Let’s Do This!
Materials
- 15″ Birch Round (I got a 3-pack from Borowood)
- Chalk Paint (Waverly White, Ink and Steel)
- FolkArt Matte Paint in Iced Coffee
- MiniWax Water-Based Polycrylic in Clear Satin
- Dollar Tree Crafter’s Square Layered Wood Blanks – Pawprint
- Four Oh Five Matte Red Vinyl
- Frisco Craft Clear Vinyl Transfer Paper Tape Roll
- Jute Twine
- Mini Zip Ties
- Foam Paint brushes
- Cricut Maker 3 & Design Space
- Scraper
- Pup Print Wired Edge Ribbon
- Heat Gun
- Wood Glue
- Small Clips
- Glue Gun
- Staple Gun
Steps
Separate the layers of the pawprint using a heat gun. Gently pry the two layers apart.

Paint upper layer with Waverly Steel chalk paint and the bottom layer with Waverly Ink. Allow to dry.
Seal with MiniWax Water-Based Polycrylic in Clear Satin. Let completely dry.

Glue pawprint layers back together using wood glue. Clip together until glue dry.
Apply 1 – 2 coats of Waverly White chalk paint to the entire front surface and edges of the wooden round. Let each coat dry completely before adding the next. This creates a clean canvas for your design.
Once the white paint is completely dry, use a dry brush technique with the FolkArt Iced Coffee paint. Lightly brush around the edges and randomly across the surface to create a subtle, distressed look that adds warmth and character.

Seal base with MiniWax Polycrylic. This helps the permanent vinyl adhere to the sign.
If you have a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette, design and cut “Life Is Better With a Dog!” in the red permanent vinyl. If you’re doing this by hand, you can print the phrase, trace it onto vinyl, and cut it out with scissors.
Determine where to place the pawprint. Apply wood glue to the back and add some hot glue to help secure it in position.

Protect the pawprint with a cloth and weigh it down with heavy items—bricks or books—until the glue is dry.
Use transfer tape to carefully position and apply your vinyl lettering to the round. Press firmly and remove the transfer tape at a sharp angle to ensure the vinyl adheres properly. Use Scraper to smooth letters.

Mark the center top on the back of the round. Cut a 6″ length of twine, fold in half and attach jute twine to the back of the round using a staple gun or hot glue.

Select ribbon and create bows using zip ties. Tie the bows together with jute twine. Hot glue and staple to the top of the sign.

This Life Is Better With A Dog! sign is perfect:
- As part of a gallery wall with family photos that include your furry friend
- Hanging on your front door to welcome visitors
- In your entryway
- Above your dog’s bed or feeding area

I’m so happy with how my sign turned out! It’s a simple way to celebrate my love for Tigger and brings a smile to my face every time I see it. If you make one, I’d love to see how yours turns out!
Tip: If you want to personalize this even more, you could add your dog’s name underneath the main phrase or include a small silhouette of your specific dog breed!
