DIY Pillowcases – Add Flair To Your Room
Sewing Your Own Pillowcases
So last year, my daughter totally hooked me up with this gorgeous quilt and bed set. It was awesome, but then I ran into a problem: I couldn’t find any pillowcases that matched! I wasn’t about to give up, though. I was on a mission to make everything look perfect, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and sew some pillowcases. If you’re in the same boat, check it out! Here’s a super-easy guide on how to sew your own pillowcases. The great part? If you’re a beginner sewer this project is perfect for you!
Choosing Your Fabric
Hi there! Before you begin your sewing project, let’s talk about choosing the right fabric. First, think about the look and feel you want to achieve. I suggest selecting a fabric that complements your bedding and bedroom decor. You can find a great selection at your local craft store or online. I chose a quilting cotton because it matched my sheet set, but broadcloth, cotton blend or satin could give you different looks.
Supplies
Makes 1 pillow case for a standard 20” x 26” pillow.

Sewing Your Pillowcases
Okay, so you got your fabric, now it’s time to get down to sewing. Here’s how you can sew a pillowcase that fits the standard size:
Pre-wash your fabric to prevent shrinkage. Iron.
Fold the fabric in half, matching selvages so the fabric lays flat. Trim frayed edges to be even.
Trim off the selvage edge. Cut the fabric 31” along selvage edges. The final rectangle size should be 35” long x 41” wide.
Finish the 41” wide edge by serging, zigzagging, or press under edge 1/2”.
If finished by serging or zigzagging, fold over 4 1/2” to the wrong side and press. If you finish the edge by pressing, fold 4” to the wrong side and press.
Stitch 1/4” from finished edge and press. and press.
Pin ribbon on right side 4” from top edge making sure hem stitch is in the center or ribbon.
Stitch along one edge. Press.
Stitch ribbon on the other edge. Press.
Trim ribbon.
Fold the fabric in half, matching ribbon, hemmed edge, and unfinished edge. Stitch around using a 1/2” seam allowance.
Cut corners diagonally.
Finish seam by serging or with a zigzag stitch.
If you’ve finished the edge by serging weave the thread tail back under the stitching using a large needle.
Turn the pillowcase and use a point turner to create sharp corners.
Press seams.
Put on the pillow and enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
Choosing the Right Thread and Ribbon
When choosing your thread and ribbon, make sure to select a color that complements your fabric. You can choose matching or contrasting colors, depending on the look you’re going for. I used matching thread for my fabric and ribbon, but you can mix and match to create a unique look.
Serging vs. Zigzag Stitch
If you have a serger, you can use it to finish the edges of your fabric. A serger creates a professional-looking finish and prevents fraying. However, if you don’t have a serger, you can use a zigzag stitch to finish the edges. A zigzag stitch is an easy and effective way to prevent fraying.
Using a Point Turner
When turning your pillowcase right-side out, use a point turner to create sharp corners. A point turner is a handy tool that helps you push out the corners of your pillowcase. This will give your pillowcase a crisp, professional-looking finish.
Adding Embellishments
If you want to add a little extra flair to your pillowcases, you can experiment with embellishments like buttons, lace, or embroidery. These embellishments can add a personal touch to your pillowcases and make them even more unique.
