First Day Adventure 2026: LOVE, Lakes, and a Little Sunshine

First Day Adventure 2026: LOVE, Lakes, and a Little Sunshine

There’s something magical about starting a new year with fresh air, scenic views, and a sense of exploration. For me and my trusty sidekick, Tigger, the tradition of a First Day Hike is more than just a walk—it’s a celebration of nature, history, and the beauty of Virginia. This year, we kicked our First Day Adventure 2026 off at Lake Anna State Park, followed by a quest to discover some of the most creative LOVEwork signs scattered across charming towns and countryside.

Lake Anna State Park – A Crisp Beginning

The day greeted us with a crisp, sunny sky—the kind that makes you want to breathe deeply and soak in every moment. Tigger and I set out on a 1.21-mile meandering hike around a small lake and shoreline. The trail was peaceful, with gentle ripples on the water and the occasional rustle of leaves reminding us that winter still held its quiet charm.

We took our time, savoring the scenery and snapping a few photos along the way. After about 30 minutes, we returned to our starting point, feeling refreshed and ready for the next part of our adventure. But first—lunch! I had packed a picnic basket, and nothing beats a simple meal enjoyed outdoors. Sandwiches, snacks, and a little hot cocoa made for the perfect fuel before hitting the road.

Kicking Off the 52 Hike Challenge

This First Day Hike wasn’t just a tradition—it marked the start of our 52 Hike Challenge for 2026! The goal? One hike every week for the entire year. It’s an exciting way to stay active, explore new trails, and make time for nature no matter how busy life gets. Starting at Lake Anna felt like the perfect launch point—a peaceful setting to set intentions for a year full of adventure.

The LOVEwork Quest Begins

Virginia’s LOVEwork signs are more than just photo ops—they’re stories told through art, each one reflecting the heritage and character of its community. Our mission? To find as many as we could and learn the tales behind them.

Mineral, VA – Mining Heritage in Art

Our first stop was Mineral, a town steeped in mining history. The LOVEwork sign here is a clever tribute:

First Day Adventure 2026

L – A pick and shovel, tools of the trade during the mining era.
O – A wagon wheel, symbolizing transportation of goods.
V – Train tracks, another vital link for moving minerals.
E – Rocks representing the wealth of resources mined here—gold, sulfur, copper, and more.

Standing before this sign, you can almost imagine the bustling activity of the past, when Mineral was a hub of industry and opportunity.

Taylor Park – Orange, VA

Next, we headed to Orange, a town rich in history and culture. The LOVE sign here is a tapestry of local pride:

L – Honoring the legal legacy of James Madison, father of the Constitution.
O – A nod to the Civil War and Orange County’s role throughout the conflict.
V – Vines representing the flourishing wine industry.
E – Equestrian traditions that remain strong today.

First Day Adventure 2026

But Orange had another surprise waiting for us—a giant Nutcracker Head towering over 30 feet high! This bug-eyed, mustachioed figure wears an old-fashioned military cap and sports the classic nutcracker teeth that are equal parts festive and creepy. Believe it or not, this colossal nutcracker started life as a tar storage tank for a paving company.

The transformation is a story in itself. Bob Langford Sr., owner of a paint company, bought the property and in 2005 decided to turn the tank into a likeness of a three-foot nutcracker he owned. He didn’t stop there—he added quirky enhancements:

First Day Adventure 2026

Arms made from corrugated PVC pipe.

Eye pupils crafted from circular saw blades.

Hat visor repurposed from the hood of a 1979 Chevy truck.

Pom-pom on the hat? An exercise ball covered in fiberglass!

If you look closely and you’ll see a cable running from the nutcracker’s nostrils to its upper lip. Yes, the jaws were designed to open and close, though Langford hasn’t yet found a motor strong enough to make it happen. Guinness World Records even told him that once the jaws work, his creation could qualify as the largest nutcracker in the world. For now, it stands as one of the most delightfully bizarre roadside attractions I’ve seen.

Clore Furniture – Madison, VA

Clore Furniture’s LOVEwork sign tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition. It represents the journey from raw timber to fine furniture:

L – Small logs, the beginning of the process.
O – Rough sawn lumber, squared and ready for shaping.
V – Two bedposts, hinting at transformation.
E – Finished pieces, sanded and mortised to perfection.

First Day Adventure 2026

The Clore family has been crafting furniture since the 1830s, and their dedication shines through in this tribute. It’s a reminder that artistry and heritage often go hand in hand.

Aylor Hollow Country Store B&B – Madison, VA

This one proved elusive! Despite our best efforts, Tigger and I couldn’t track down this hidden gem. But that’s the beauty of road trips—there’s always something left for next time. Consider it a reason to return and explore more of Madison’s charm.

Blue Quartz Winery – Etlan, VA

First Day Adventure 2026

Nestled in the foothills, this LOVEworks sign is a rustic masterpiece. Constructed from antique farm implements, it reflects the agricultural roots of the property and the enduring spirit of Virginia farming. It’s a perfect blend of history and hospitality.

Blue Door Kitchen and Inn – Flint Hill, VA

Talk about creativity! This sign is a shimmering work of art:

Built with pressure-treated wood and cement board.

Finished using a mosaic technique with broken mirror pieces. The result? A dazzling LOVEwork sign that literally reflects the beauty of Rappahannock County. At 5 feet tall and 12 feet long, it’s a showstopper!

First Day Adventure 2026

Front Royal – Front Royal, VA

First Day Adventure 2026

Our final stop brought us to a colorful mountain scene—a LOVE sign that celebrates the natural splendor of the Shenandoah Valley. It’s vibrant, inviting, and the perfect way to wrap up our journey.

Ending the Day in Cozy Bliss

After our First Day Adventure 2026 day of hiking and sightseeing, nothing felt better than slipping into my favorite PJ’s, brewing a cup of hot tea, and settling in front of the glowing Christmas tree. The golden lights cast a warm, peaceful glow across the room as Tigger snuggled up beside me. It was the perfect way to savor the quiet, reflect on the day’s adventures, and welcome the new year with gratitude and calm.

A Day Full of LOVE

There’s something deeply satisfying about combining nature, history, and creativity into one adventure. From the peaceful shores of Lake Anna to the artistic expressions of Virginia’s towns, our First Day Adventure 2026 reminded me why I love exploring. Each sign told a story, each stop offered a new perspective, and every mile was worth it.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just looking for a fun day trip, Virginia’s LOVEwork signs are a fantastic way to connect with the state’s heritage—and snap some unforgettable photos along the way.
