What is the 52 Week Sewing Challenge?
Welcome to Down Home at Dee’s 52 Week Sewing Challenge 2026 – Week 1! This year-long adventure is all about rediscovering the joy of sewing—one week, one theme, one project at a time. Each week brings a fresh prompt designed to spark creativity, encourage progress, and help us tackle those “someday” projects. Week 1 Theme: Finish a Work in Progress (WIP)
When I saw the first theme, I knew exactly which project was coming out of hiding—a quilt that’s been waiting nearly two decades to be finished!
The Backstory: A Quilt 20 Years in the Making

If you’ve ever started a project with the best intentions only to tuck it away for “later,” you’ll understand this story. My quilt journey began almost 20 years ago with the Turning Twenty… Again pattern by Tricia Cribbs. I fell in love with its simplicity and charm and chose fabrics that spoke to me: the Girls on the Go bundle and some beautiful Waverly cottons.
Life happened, and my SewJo disappeared for a long time. I only worked on the quilt in bits and pieces before packing it away for what I thought would be a short break. That “short break” stretched into years. Every time I stumbled across it, I felt a pang of guilt—but also a tiny spark of hope that one day I’d finally finish it.
Someday finally arrived—thanks to the 52 Week Sewing Challenge 2026 – Week 1 which gave me the push I needed to make it happen.
What I Accomplished This Week
Here’s how I brought this long-forgotten quilt back to life:
- Added the Pink Border: Cut and stitched a soft pink frame around the quilt top.
- Prepared the Backing: Pieced together the backing fabric so it was ready to go.
- Layered and Pinned: Sandwiched the backing, batting, and quilt top, then pinned everything securely.
- Tied the Layers: Used a classic tying method to hold the layers together.
- Stitched Around the Border: Reinforced the edges for durability and a polished look.
- Trimmed Borders: Evened out the edges for a clean finish.

- Made the Binding: Cut 2 1/2″ strips and sewed together to create a long strip.
- Binding: Stitched the binding strips to the quilt top.

- Pressed and Stitched: Folded the binding to the back and pressed.
- Stitched in the Ditch: Secured the binding neatly for a professional finish.
- Final Touch: Washed and pressed the quilt so it’s fresh and ready to use!

The Transformation
There’s something truly magical about finishing a project that’s been waiting for years. This quilt isn’t just fabric and thread—it’s a story of persistence, creativity, and the joy of completing what you started. Holding it now, I feel proud, accomplished, and inspired to keep going. Honestly, I’m not sure I would have finished this quilt without the push from the 52 Week Sewing Challenge 2026 – Week 1!
Bonus Win: Finishing this quilt also counts toward the Pattern Review 2026 Fabric Stash Challenge for January and February! It’s a great way to use up those long-stored fabrics while tackling multiple challenges at once. Double the motivation, double the fun!
