From Jazz Halls to Neon Streets: A Time Traveler’s Playlist
Your weekly ticket to a world where creativity takes the wheel and reality takes a coffee break.
Welcome to Fun Friday!!
Pull up a chair, grab your favorite drink, and settle in for Fun Friday Creative Writing Prompts—where we trade spreadsheets for storylines and deadlines for daydreams.

Every Friday, I’ll toss a quirky, thought-provoking, or downright wild writing prompt your way. Whether you’re a seasoned storyteller, a closet poet, or just someone who likes to let their mind wander, this is your space to stretch those creative muscles and have a little fun while you’re at it.

This Week’s Prompt: A Time Traveler’s Playlist
What if every song in a mysterious playlist wasn’t just a tune, but a doorway? Imagine a set of tracks—unnamed, pulsing like a heartbeat—that send you hurtling into different eras the moment the beat drops.
One moment you’re in Harlem’s jazz‑soaked nights, the next you’re swallowed by neon futures or standing at the edge of a revolution. Each track offers a lesson, a danger, a choice. The question isn’t where the playlist will take you… but whether you’ll dare to press play.
Why This Prompt Works
A Time Traveler’s Playlist is more than just a fun mental vacation (though it’s definitely that too). It’s a powerful tool for:
- Music already feels like time travel – A single song can pull you into memories, moods, and eras—so turning that emotional truth into literal time travel feels instantly intuitive.
- It offers built‑in structure and freedom – Each track can be its own mini‑story, era, lesson, or adventure, giving writers a strong framework without limiting creativity.
- It blends emotion with world‑building – Music is deeply personal, so every time jump is tied to character, memory, and meaning—not just plot.
- It opens the door to limitless genres –
- Want sci‑fi? The playlist can send you to the future.
- Want historical fiction? Pick a classical track.
- Want mystery, romance, horror, comedy? Choose your next song.

Plus, it’s just plain fun. And let’s be honest—after a long week of meetings, emails, and trying to remember where you left your phone (check the fridge, trust me), we could all use a little escape.
How to Join the Fun
Here’s how you can hop on this creative ride:

- Use the hashtag #FunFridayCreativeWriting if you’re sharing online so we can all find each other and cheer each other on.
- Write your response to the prompt. It can be a short story, a poem, a journal entry, a script—whatever tickles your fancy.
- Keep it casual or go deep. Want to write a 100-word flash fiction? Go for it. Want to pen a 2,000-word epic? We’re here for it.
- Share it! Post it on your blog, your social media, or just keep it in your journal. If you’re feeling brave, drop a snippet in the comments or email it to me—I’d love to read it!
A Little Inspiration to Get You Started
Here’s a quick peek at how one might begin this journey:
Play to Wander
by Down Home at Dee’s
The record shop wasn’t on any map.
Alex—short for Alexandria—found it by accident, or maybe it found Alex. The street was a forgotten alley in the city, pulsing faintly under the weight of time. Neon signs flickered like dying stars. Rain turned the pavement silver. Alex had been walking for hours, headphones silent around her neck, chasing a feeling she couldn’t name.
Music had always been Alex’s refuge. A way to drown out the noise of deadlines, bills, and the hollow hum of modern life. But lately, even music felt thin—like a photograph bleached by sunlight. Playlists that once sparked joy now fell flat and lifeless. Every song sounded like an echo of something better.
So when the shop appeared, Alex noticed.
A crooked sign above a warped door read “Needle & Groove.” The letters were peeling, but something about them whispered come closer. The windows were fogged from age, hiding secrets behind a veil of grime. Alex hesitated, rain dripping from her jacket, then pushed the door open.
The air in the small shop was thick with dust and secrets. Rows of vinyl stood like soldiers, their sleeves worn and frayed. A single bulb hung overhead, casting shadows that danced to an invisible rhythm. No clerk. No customers. Just silence—until Alex heard it: a faint hum, like a note held too long.
It came from the back where a box hid under a scarred table. Alex knelt, brushing cardboard until fingers found it—a record unlike any other. The sleeve shimmered faintly, moonlit and alive. Gold letters spelled:
Play to wander.
See? Easy peasy!
Your Turn! What’s on Your Time Traveler’s Playlist?
Now it’s your turn to step into the music. Imagine picking up a playlist that doesn’t just play songs—it opens doors. Where does the first track take you? What danger or wonder waits behind the beat?

Whether you choose jazz‑soaked nights, neon‑lit futures, or centuries still humming with prophecy, let the rhythm guide your words. Don’t overthink it—follow the feeling, the spark, the shiver that makes your heart sync to the story’s pulse. Press play and start wandering. The next era—your era—is waiting.
So grab your pen, your keyboard, or your favorite notebook—and start writing. I can’t wait to see where your imagination takes you. I’m excited to see where our creative journey take us!
