Let’s Make a Spook-tacular Halloween BOO Sign!
Grab your coffee (or pumpkin spice latte – no judgment here!) and let’s craft something amazing!
Okay friends, can we talk about how much I LOVE this time of year? The leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp, and it’s officially time to deck out our homes in all things spooky-cute! I’ve been working on this adorable Halloween BOO sign, and I’m honestly so excited to share it with you because it turned out even better than I hoped.
Why I Love This Project
Listen, I’ve made my fair share of Halloween decorations over the years (some winners, some… well, let’s just say they didn’t make it to the front door), but this one hits different. The metallic paints give it this gorgeous shimmer that catches the light perfectly, and the little details – like the tiny bow on the ghost – just make my crafty heart so happy.
Before we dive in, let’s gather everything up. I know it seems like a long list, but trust me, most of this stuff you probably already have floating around your craft room!
Let’s Do This!
Supplies –
- Mod Podge (Regular and Spray)
- Waverly Paint in Plaster, Pumpkin, White, and Ink
- Delta Ceramcoat Metallic in Pumpkin, Bla.ck, and Lime Green (from Dollar Tree)
- Craft Smart Metallic in White Pearl and Apple Tart
- Wood cutouts: Letter B, Jack O’ Lantern, and Ghost (Jack O’ Lantern and Ghost from Dollar Tree)
- Wood board for backing (mine is 1/2” x 5 3/4” x 14”)
- Halloween napkin (decorative layer only)
- Foam brushes
- Mini heat press and Parchment Paper
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Pin nailer and Pin nails (optional)
- Drill with small bit
- 16 gauge wire and wire cutters
- Small floral fall leaf
- 3/8″ Halloween ribbon
- Strip of Halloween fabric
- Titebond wood glue
Steps –
Creating Dimensional Characters
Preparing Your Letter B – Start by applying a thin layer of Mod Podge to your letter “B” using a foam brush. This creates the perfect base for your napkin transfer later. Set it aside to dry. We’ll go back to finishing it later.
For the Jack O’ Lantern: Apply a base coat of Pumpkin chalk paint, allowing it to dry completely. Then add a layer of Pumpkin metallic paint for that gorgeous shimmer. The key here is patience – each layer needs to dry fully for the best results.
For the Ghost: Follow the same two-step process using White chalk paint as your base, followed by Metallic White Pearl. This creates a beautiful, ethereal glow perfect for our friendly ghost.

Creating That Perfect Frame

Okay, this part might seem a little fussy, but it’s what takes this project from “cute” to “WOW.” Grab your ruler and mark 1/2″ lines around your board. Yes, I know, measuring isn’t the fun part, but stick with me!
Apply painter’s tape along those lines, and here’s a pro tip from someone who’s learned the hard way – really press that tape down. No bubbles, no wrinkles, or you’ll end up with wobbly lines that’ll make you want to start over (ask me how I know!).

Paint the main area with Black chalk paint, let dry then add that Metallic Black on top.
Once it’s dry, move your tape to expose just the edge.

Paint them with Apple Tart, followed by Metallic Lime Green. The contrast is absolutely stunning!
The Napkin Trick That Changes Everything
This is where things get really fun! Separate your napkin so you’re just working with that pretty printed layer. Position it on your “B” exactly where you want it, cover with parchment paper then use your heat press to adhere it. This is the mod podge heat technique.

If you don’t have a heat press, no worries! You can use an iron on a low setting – just be gentle and patient. For removing the excess napkin, I like to sand it gently in a downward motion. Some people use a lighter to burn away the excess and it works great. Just make sure you don’t burn yourself. Don’t ask me how I know this could happen!
Once you’re happy with how it looks, give it a light spray of Mod Podge and smooth it out with your mini press or iron.
Those Little Details That Make All the Difference

This is why I love crafting – it’s all about those tiny touches! Hot glue a small fall leaf right on top of your Jack O’ Lantern where that stem hole is. It looks like it was always meant to be there!
And for our ghost? Tie the tiniest bow with your Halloween ribbon and glue it right on top. Suddenly our ghost goes from cute to absolutely adorable.
Putting It All Together
Here’s where we make it permanent! Spread wood glue on the backs of all three pieces and stick them to your board. I like to put something heavy on top while it dries – a few books work perfectly.
If you want this BOO sign to last through many Halloween seasons (and trust me, you will!), add a few pin nails for extra security.

Making It Hangable

Cut yourself a piece of that 16 gauge wire and wrap the ends around a pencil for those cute little curls. Drill two small holes in the top of your Boo sign, add some hot glue, and pop that wire right in.
For the final touch, tie a strip of Halloween fabric to one side of the wire. It adds just the right amount of whimsy!

Pro Tips for Success
- Work on multiple pieces at once – while one thing is drying, you can be painting something else
- Open those windows! Some of these products can get a bit strong
- Don’t rush the drying times. I know it’s tempting, but good things come to those who wait
- If you’re nervous about the napkin transfer, practice on a scrap piece first
Why This Project Works
This Halloween BOO sign hits all the right notes: it’s seasonal without being overly kitschy, uses techniques that create professional results, and combines different textures and finishes for visual interest. The metallic accents catch light beautifully whether displayed indoors or on a covered porch.
Display Ideas
- Hang on your front door as a welcoming Halloween greeting
- Display on a mantel with other seasonal decorations
- Use as part of a larger Halloween vignette
- Gift to fellow Halloween enthusiasts – it’s substantial enough to feel special
Can We Talk About How Great This Project Is?
There’s something so special about making something with your own hands, you know? Every time someone compliments your BOO sign (and they will!), you get to have that little moment of satisfaction where you think “Yeah, I made that.”
Plus, let’s be real – this probably costs less than $20 to make, but it looks like something from a high-end boutique. That’s what I call a win-win!
So what do you think? Are you ready to make your own BOO sign? I’d love to see how yours turns out – tag me #downhomeatdees if you share it on social media! And if you put your own spin on it (different colors, extra decorations, whatever makes you happy), I love to see that too.
Happy crafting, my friends! May your paint be smooth, your glue gun be hot, and your Halloween decorations be absolutely perfect! 🎃
