My Photography Journey: A Year with My Camera

A Year With My Camera is a free online photography course taught by Emma Davies. It’s a year long photography journey. I started the class previously with my trusty Nikon D40, but after reaching Lesson 6, it started becoming temperamental. I decided to upgrade to a newer model, a Nikon D7000, and now I’m starting fresh from Lesson 1 to learn both photography and my “new” camera.

My Photography Journey

I’m super excited to begin the class again on December 30, 2024. This self-paced learning journey will take me from basic camera operations to creating compelling images over 52 weeks.

As a beginner-intermediate photographer, I’m looking forward to mastering my camera’s manual settings, understanding composition techniques, and developing my creative eye. The weekly structure will help me build a consistent photography practice while learning at my own pace.

Make 30 Photos

I started learning my camera through the Make 30 Photos challenge. What’s great about this challenge is its flexibility—I don’t have to finish it in 30 days. I can take my time, focusing on thoughtful photography: make it, don’t take it.

The challenge welcomes any camera, whether it’s my D7000 or phone camera, even in auto mode. Its main purpose is to help me develop a creative eye and notice photo opportunities in the world around me.

I’ve completed twenty-three of the thirty challenges and plan to finish the remaining seven before starting the course. But if I don’t? No worries! I can complete them at my own pace.
