Why Make a Zipper Pouch?
- Useful for organizing: Tame the chaos in your bag or workspace with dedicated pouches for small items.
- Perfect for gifting: Handmade pouches are thoughtful, practical presents that you can personalize for any occasion.
- Great scrap-buster: Use leftover fabric to create unique, eco-friendly organizers.
- Quick and satisfying: Complete this project in less than an hour from start to finish.
Let’s Do This!
Supplies –
- 2 – fat quarters
- 7 – 9” zipper
- Thread
- Pellon EZ Steam II 1/4″
Tools –
- Cricut Maker with Rotary cutting wheel
- Design Space Zipper Pouch Design or PDF Pattern
- Sewing Machine & sewing accessories
- Iron
Instructions –
Cut zipper pouch and lining using Design Space Zipper Pouch Design or PDF pattern.

Making the Pouch Front –

Press a 1/2″ fold on each of the four front pieces where the zipper will attach.
Apply Pellon EZ Steam II to the top of the zipper.

Position the pressed edges of the upper and lower pouch fabric on the zipper tape and press to adhere.
Flip the assembly face down and apply Pellon EZ Steam II to the back of the zipper tape. Position the pressed edges of the upper and lower lining pieces (right side up) on the zipper and press.

Using a zipper foot, stitch along the zipper to secure all layers.
Attaching the Back to the Front
Open the zipper halfway. (This step is critical—don’t skip it or you’ll regret it!) With right sides together, stitch the pouch back to the pouch front using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

With the pouch lining side up, place the back lining piece face down onto the pouch, matching edges. Stitch together with a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving a 2″ opening for turning.
Trim seams and clip corners.
Turn the pouch so the lining is outside. Slip stitch the opening closed. Turn right side out and press.

Your zipper pouch is ready to store all your miscellaneous items! Whether you use it for makeup, pens, travel essentials or simply to keep your bag organized, you’ll be amazed by how handy this little project can be.
Tips for Success
Don’t forget to open your zipper halfway before sewing the pouch closed! This is crucial – otherwise, you’ll sew your pouch shut with no way to turn it right side out. Ask me how I know this…
Using the Pellon EZ Steam II makes attaching the zipper nearly foolproof. It holds everything in place while you sew, preventing the usual zipper frustrations.
Customization Ideas
Once you’ve mastered the basic pouch, try these variations:
- Add a fabric wrist strap for a convenient wristlet
- Use waterproof fabric for a toiletry bag
- Embroider initials or designs before assembly
- Scale the pattern up or down for different sizes
Perfect Gift Idea!
These pouches make wonderful gifts. Fill them with small items tailored to the recipient – beauty products, art supplies, tech accessories, or sewing notions. Add a personalized tag, and you have a thoughtful gift that’s sure to impress!
