Welcome to my latest project tutorial: the Quilt as You Go Casserole Hot Pad! This handy kitchen accessory is not only functional, but it’s also a great way to show off your quilting skills.

The “quilt as you go” technique is a fun and easy way to create a quilted project. The best part? You’re quilting as you’re piecing, so once you’re done, you’re done!

Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced quilter – this project is perfect for beginners and experts alike!

Materials

  • Fat Quarters / Scraps of Cotton Fabric
  • 16” x 12” piece of Warm & Natural Batting
  • 16” x 12” piece of Flannel
  • Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat & Quilting Ruler
  • Straight Pins & Scissors
  • Sewing Machine and Thread

Cutting your fabric!

Use the rotary cutter and quilting ruler to cut your chosen fabric into 2 1/2” strips.

Cut the flannel and warm & natural batting into a 15 1/2” x 11 1/2” rectangle.

Place the flannel right side down and layer the batting on top.

Stitching Your Hot Pad!

Situate the flannel and batting on the cutting mat where the 45° lines are.

Align one 2 1/2” strip of fabric right side up along the diagonal line. Pin it in place.

Place another 2 1/2” strip right side down on top of the first strip and pin it.

Stitch using a 1/4” seam allowance and a short stitch length. I use a Little Foot sewing foot to keep my seams an exact 1/4” wide.

Open the strips and press the seam.

Repeat the previous steps until the flannel and batting are covered. Make sure you press well between stitching strips.

Sizing Your Hot Pad!

Turn the hot pad with the flannel side up. Trim the quilted layer to be 15″ x 11″ rectangle.

Baste around the hot pad using a 1/4” seam allowance.

Binding for Your Casserole Hot Pad!

Cut enough 3” strips to bind the outer edge of the hot pad.

Stitch the 3” strips together using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press the seams open.

Press the fabric strip in half, matching the seams, to create the binding.

Pin the raw edge of the binding to the top edge of the hot pad.

Start attaching the binding to the hot pad, beginning the seam about 3” from the short edge of the binding.

To create a mitered corner, stop stitching about 1/4” from the edge. Leave needle in the down position.

Lift the presser foot and turn the hot pad. Drop the presser foot and backstitch to off the edge.

Fold the binding back onto itself and start stitching down the edge.

Halt stitching the binding, leaving about a 6” gap.

Mark 1/4” on the beginning edge of binding. Mark the ending edge to match the 1/4” seam.

Cut the binding on the marking.

Pin the edges together and stitch.

Open the seam allowance and press.

Press the binding in half.

Finish stitching the binding to the hot pad.

Finishing Up Your Casserole Hot Pad!

Press the binding away from the hot pad.

Pin the binding to the back of the hot pad, ensuring the mitered corners are even.

Use the “stitch in the ditch” technique to stitch the binding to the hot pad.

And now you have a beautiful Quilt As You Go Casserole Pad to add a touch of color to your table!
