Rustic Farmhouse Sunflower Sconce
Farmhouse Sunflower Sconce – Transform Everyday Items into a Cheerful Wall Sconce!
Have you ever looked at a cutting board and thought, “This would make a beautiful wall sconce”? No? Well, that’s exactly the creative leap I made when designing my latest DIY project: the Farmhouse Sunflower Sconce. This unique lighting fixture combines rustic farmhouse aesthetics with practical lighting—perfect for adding warmth and character to any space.
Let’s Do This!
Supplies & Tools –
- A slim cutting board (I found mine at Walmart)
- Waverly Chalk Paint in White and Truffle (available at Wallmart)
- Wood pencil container
- Modge Podge (Matte Finish – both Original and Spray On)
- Sunflower tissue paper (I picked up mine from Hobby Lobby)
- Titebond Wood Glue
- Floral foam block
- Timer 6″ taper
- Floral picks
- 5/8″ Black Buffalo Check Ribbon
- Jute twine
- Cricut Mini Heat Press & Parchment Paper
- Ryobi Battery Glue Gun & Gorilla Glue Sticks
- Bar Clamps
- Saw & Miter Box
- Measuring Tape and/or Ruler
- Foam Brush
Preparation and Painting
I started by giving both the cutting board and the wooden pencil cup a fresh coat of White Waverly Chalk Paint. The chalk paint gives a beautiful matte finish that’s perfect for that farmhouse look. Make sure to let each piece dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Adding the Sunflower Detail

The sunflower is what really makes this piece special! I applied a thin layer of Matte Modge Podge to one side of the pencil cup and let it dry completely.
Then, I used my Cricut Mini Heat Press to adhere a sunflower cutout from tissue paper to the front of the pencil box. If you haven’t tried this technique before, check out my video short “Napkin Decoupage with Heat Press” for a detailed tutorial.

To seal the sunflower decoupage, I sprayed a light coat of Modge Podge over the sunflower, then ironed out any bubbles and wrinkles using parchment paper and my mini heat press.
Creating Dimension with Distressing
To add character and depth, I lightly distressed the edges of both the cutting board and the pencil box using Truffle Waverly Chalk Paint. This subtle distressing really enhances the rustic charm of the piece.

Assembly
Next came the assembly process. I centered the pencil box on the cutting board and secured it with Titebond wood glue. To ensure it stayed in place while drying, I added a couple drops of hot glue from my Gorilla glue gun, covered it with a rag to protect the finish, and used clamps until the adhesive was completely dry.

For the interior, I used a saw and miter box to cut the floral foam block to fit perfectly inside the pencil box.
I created a small indent in the center of the foam block and secured it inside the box with hot glue.

Finishing Touches

The final steps were all about adding those special decorative elements. I inserted floral picks into the foam to create a beautiful arrangement and added a decorative bow made from Black Buffalo Check Ribbon. For hanging, I cut a length of jute twine, tied the ends together, and looped it through the cutting board.
Styling Tips
This versatile piece works beautifully in several areas of your home:
- Kitchen – hang it near your cooking area for a cheerful accent
- Entryway – create a welcoming first impression
- Living room – add it to a gallery wall for dimension
- Bathroom – bring warmth to a sometimes sterile space
Customize It!
While I love the sunflower design for its cheerful summer vibe, you can easily customize this project by:
- Using different tissue paper designs for seasonal changes
- Changing the paint colors to match your decor
- Adding different ribbon styles for various holidays
- Including battery-operated fairy lights for evening ambiance
Final Thoughts
This Sunflower Sconce project is the perfect weekend craft – simple enough for beginners but with stunning results that look professional. The combination of the rustic cutting board, cheerful sunflower, and functional floral holder creates a unique piece that brings warmth and character to any space.
