Sew My Stash Challenge August 2024 – Get Ready!
Are you ready for the Sew My Stash Challenge August 2024? August 1st is four days away! But you still have plenty of time to dive into your stash of fabric, patterns and projects to decide what you’re going to focus on. This challenge is all about using what you already have, reducing waste, and making beautiful projects without buying a lot of new stuff. Whether you’re a seasoned sewer or a beginner, this challenge is a great way to push your creativity and skills to the next level.
Let’s Do This!
Plan Your Projects
Think about what you want to create. Do you have any unfinished projects that you can complete? Are there any new ideas you’ve been dying to try? Make a list of potential projects and match them with supplies from your stash.
My process started with going through my pattern stash and setting aside the patterns I really want to make. I picked a lot of patterns but I know I either won’t have fabric in my stash to make them or get all of them done in a month.
I also pulled projects from my Work In Progress pile and projects I’ve had planned for a long time. Many of these projects either have everything I need to make them or only missing an item or two.
This is just my starting point in my planning process!
Assess Your Stash
Take a good look at your fabric, pattern and notion collection. Sort through your supplies and organize them by type, color, or project potential. This will help you quickly find what you need when inspiration strikes.
Once I selected the patterns I’m thinking of making, I moved on to my fabric stash to see what I already have I can use. My next step is to look through my button, zipper and thread stash to see if I have the notions I need to make the project.
Gather Your Supplies
Make sure you have all the necessary supplies like thread, needles, pins, and patterns. While the focus is on using your stash, you might still need some basic supplies to complete your projects.
Organize Your Projects
When I gathered my supplies, I listed anything I didn’t have in my stash that I need to make my project on an index card. I put everything together in a three gallon zip-lock storage bag along with the list of missing supplies and situated the pattern to show in front of the bag.
To keep track of the projects I want to sew, I use a sewing planner. To help with my planning, I print a reduced line drawing of the pattern and add it to my planner. When I decide on the fabric for the project, I color the line drawing with colored pencils to visualize the outcome.
I designed the “Sew Organized” planner to help me manage the patterns I want to make, plan projects throughout the year with a “Sewing at a Glance” section, record measurements, project details, ideas, and much more. The “Sew Organized” planner is 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, making it convenient to tuck in my purse and take with me.

Set Goals
Set some personal goals for the challenge. How many projects do you want to complete? Do you want to try a new technique? Having clear goals will keep you motivated throughout the month.
Setting realistic goals is VERY hard for me!! I get excited about a challenge and don’t have a practical outlook on how to obtain my goals. This immediately sets me up for disappointment, guilt, self-recriminations of “failure”.
I made a list of seventeen possible projects for me to complete. Six on my list are relatively easy and won’t take a lot of time to complete, leaving eleven that I anticipate to be somewhat time consuming. I’ll focus on the projects I have all the supplies for first. Having a combination of projects help me stay motivated.
