This month-long event is all about using what you already have to make beautiful, creative projects. Whether you’re a seasoned sewist or a beginner, this challenge is a fantastic way to fire up your sewing mojo, push your creativity and make something uniquely yours.
What is the Sew My Stash Challenge?
The Sew My Stash Challenge is a fairly new for Down Home at Dee’s, and I hope it becomes an annual tradition. I tried participating last August, but life had other plans. Despite completing just a few projects, I still consider the challenge a success.
This challenge encourages sewers to use materials they already own to complete projects. It’s a fun, sustainable way to maximize your existing stash, reduce waste, and save money. It also provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow sewing enthusiasts and showcase your creations.
What is unique about this challenge is that it’s not just about using your fabric stash; it’s about using ANYTHING in your stash! Fabric, patterns, zippers, buttons, and anything else you’ve “collected” but haven’t used. If you have an embroidery machine and hundreds of embroidery designs, like I do, stitching out unused designs on projects counts too! This challenge also helps you finish projects that are now sitting in your Work In Progress (WIP) pile, which is also a type of stash! You’ve “stashed” these projects to finish later!
Why am I doing the Sew My Stash Challenge?
I started sewing 40+ years ago and have accumulated an overwhelming amount of fabric, notions and patterns.
For a long time I didn’t regularly sew. I would make things here and there but not like I used to. Life has a way of throwing curve balls that sometimes really derail you and that’s what happened to me. I lost my sewing mojo. Well to be frank, I lost my mojo for almost everything. I’ve spent many years just trying to get through each day. But that’s a story for another day!
Last year, something shifted and my sewing mojo returned! I not only participated in the 52 Week Sewing Challenge 2024 but actually completed it. This is BIG for me! In previous years, I’d start these challenges but quit after just a couple of months. The wonderful outcome of this year-long journey was rediscovering my passion for sewing. I had truly forgotten how much joy I found in planning, designing, and creating sewing projects—whether quilting, home decor, or apparel.
During the years I didn’t often sew I didn’t lose my love of fabric and patterns. I would buy what I needed for a project but then never actually make it. Which means I have an abundance of fabric, patterns and notions! Which is why I decided to do the Sew My Stash Challenge!
How to Participate
Sign Up: Register for the challenge by filling out Sew My Stash September 2025 Registration.
Choose Your Projects: Look through your fabric stash and decide on the projects you want to tackle. The sky’s the limit!
Share Your Progress: Post updates on social media using the hashtag #dhad_SewMyStashSept2025. Show off your planning process, fabric and pattern choices, progress photos, and finished projects.
Join the Community: Engage with other participants, offer encouragement, and get inspired by the amazing projects being created.
