Welcome to Fun Friday!!

Pull up a chair, grab your favorite drink and settle in for the very first edition of Fun Friday Creative Writing Prompts—where we trade spreadsheets for storylines and deadlines for daydreams.

Elevator to Elsewhere

Every Friday, I’ll toss a quirky, thought-provoking, or downright wild writing prompt your way. Whether you’re a seasoned storyteller, a closet poet, or just someone who likes to let their mind wander, this is your space to stretch those creative muscles and have a little fun while you’re at it.

And let me tell you, I’m kicking things off with a bang.

Elevator to Elsewhere

This Week’s Prompt:
The Elevator to Elsewhere

You step into an elevator and press the button for the 10th floor. Instead, the elevator takes you to a parallel universe. What do you see when the doors open?

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’ve had some strange elevator rides in my time—awkward silences, elevator music that sounds like it was composed by a confused robot, and that one time someone brought a full rotisserie chicken in a gym bag (don’t ask). But nothing quite like this.

Imagine it: You’re just trying to get to your office, maybe running a little late, coffee in hand, when the elevator lurches, the lights flicker, and suddenly… ding! The doors slide open, and you’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

What Might You See?

This is where your imagination gets to run wild. Maybe you step out into:

  • A utopia, where kindness is currency, Mondays don’t exist, and tacos are free on every corner.
  • A world where gravity works sideways, and people walk on walls like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
  • A city in the clouds, where folks ride giant butterflies to work and the mayor is a talking cat in a top hat.
  • A mirror version of your own life, but everything is just a little… off. Your coworkers are lizards in suits. Your desk is made of jelly. Your boss speaks only in riddles.
  • A post-apocalyptic wasteland, where the only survivors are sentient vending machines and a band of rebellious raccoons.

Why This Prompt Works

This prompt is more than just a fun mental vacation (though it’s definitely that too). It’s a powerful tool for:

Elevator to Elsewhere
  • Letting go of logic and embracing the weird and wonderful
  • Exploring alternate realities and what-ifs
  • Diving into world-building for sci-fi or fantasy writers
  • Tapping into personal reflection through metaphor
  • Practicing descriptive writing and sensory detail

Plus, it’s just plain fun. And let’s be honest—after a long week of meetings, emails, and trying to remember where you left your phone (check the fridge, trust me), we could all use a little escape.

How to Join the Fun

Here’s how you can hop on this creative elevator ride:

  • Use the hashtag #FunFridayCreativeWriting if you’re sharing online so we can all find each other and cheer each other on.
  • Write your response to the prompt. It can be a short story, a poem, a journal entry, a script—whatever tickles your fancy.
  • Keep it casual or go deep. Want to write a 100-word flash fiction? Go for it. Want to pen a 2,000-word epic? We’re here for it.
  • Share it! Post it on your blog, your social media, or just keep it in your journal. If you’re feeling brave, drop a snippet in the comments or email it to me—I’d love to read it!

A Little Inspiration to Get You Started

Here’s a quick peek at how one might begin this journey:

The Elevator to Elsewhere
By Down Home at Dee’s

I’ve lived in this building for seven years. Seven years of beige hallways, humming fluorescent lights, and the same two elevators—left for odd floors, right for even. I knew every scuff mark on the walls, every squeaky hinge, every faint smell of detergent that lingered after the cleaning crew left. This place was predictable, almost comforting in its monotony.

So when I saw the third elevator, I froze.

It was tucked into the far corner of the lobby, where there had always been a blank wall. I was sure of it. A brushed steel door gleamed under the dim light, perfectly polished, as if it had been waiting for me. No sign above it, no floor indicator, no call button. Just… there.

I blinked hard, rubbed my eyes. Still there.

“Excuse me,” I said to the security guard at the desk. He looked up from his phone, bored. “Was this here yesterday?”

He frowned. “What?”

“The elevator,” I said, pointing. “That one.”

He followed my finger, then shrugged. “Been here as long as I have.”

That was impossible. I walked toward it slowly, my footsteps echoing on the marble floor. The closer I got, the stranger it seemed—too perfect, too clean, as if untouched by time or fingerprints. My reflection shimmered on the steel like a ghost.

See? Easy as pie!

Don’t Wait for the 10th Floor

Life’s a lot like that elevator ride. You think you know where you’re headed, but sometimes the universe has other plans. And sometimes, those detours? They’re where the magic happens.

So this weekend, give yourself permission to explore the Elsewhere. Let your imagination take the wheel. You never know what you’ll find when the doors open.

Your Turn! Push the Button and See Where You Land!

Ready to ride the Elevator to Elsewhere? Grab your pen, your keyboard, or your favorite napkin and start writing. Don’t worry about being perfect—just be curious. Be bold. Be weird.

And most of all, have fun.

Join me next Friday for a fresh new prompt—and to dive deeper into my story. Until then, keep dreaming, keep writing, and remember: the 10th floor isn’t always where you expect it.
