Virginia State Parks First Day Hike Tradition
First Day Hike—Start the Year on the Right Foot—One Trail at a Time!
There’s something magical about starting the year on a trail. Crisp winter air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the promise of new adventures ahead. For me, that magic began in 2018 at Shenandoah River State Park. It was my first First Day Hike, and little did I know it would spark a tradition that has shaped my New Year’s celebrations ever since.

Why First Day Hikes Matter
First Day Hikes aren’t just about logging miles. They’re about starting the year with intention—choosing nature over noise, fresh air over screens, and adventure over routine. Virginia State Parks make this easy with their stunning landscapes, well-maintained trails, and welcoming community spirit.
Every hike feels like a reset button. It’s a chance to reflect on the past year, set goals for the new one, and soak in the beauty that’s right in our backyard.
My First Day Hike Journey
Since that day, I’ve embraced the challenge almost every year but occasionally life got in the way. But the spirit of the tradition never faded. Here’s a quick look at my First Day Hike journey so far:
2018 – Shenandoah River State Park

Shenandoah River State Park, where my First Day Hike tradition began.
2020 – Sky Meadows State Park

Rolling hills, peaceful trails, and Rosie loving every step at Sky Meadows State Park.
2022 – Shenandoah River State Park

A return to the location of my first First Day Hike but on a different trail. The weather was wet & damp and my regular hiking partner Rosie didn’t want to leave her warm bed.
2023 – Seven Bends State Park

Rosie & I found this hidden gem with trails that felt like a secret waiting to be shared.
2025 – Sweet Run State Park

The newest addition to Virginia’s park family—what a way to kick off the year! Tigger & I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this new park.

And coming up in 2026, I’ve already set my sights on Lake Anna State Park. Because when you commit to a tradition, you make it happen!
It’s more than just another hike—it’s a milestone in my quest to explore every Virginia State Park. With Tigger by my side, every trail feels like an adventure. In fact, this year I’ve planned a whole First Day Adventure for the two of us!
Trail Quest: The Bigger Goal
While First Day Hikes are my annual ritual, I’ve also taken on a bigger challenge: Virginia State Parks Trail Quest. The goal? Visit all 43 state parks and earn the coveted Master Hiker certificate. It’s ambitious, but every step brings me closer.

So far, I’ve registered these parks in my Trail Quest journey:
- Caledon State Park (CA)
- Westmoreland State Park (WE)
- Sky Meadows State Park (SK)
- Raymond R. “Andy” Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park (SH)
- Natural Bridge State Park (NB)
- Seven Bends State Park (SE)
- Sweet Run State Park (SN)
- Hungry Mother State Park (HM)
Each park has its own personality—its own story to tell. From the sweeping views at Sky Meadows to the riverside tranquility of Shenandoah River, every visit feels like discovering a new chapter in Virginia’s outdoor heritage.
Why Wait? The Trails Are Calling!
Traditions like First Day Hikes remind us that the best resolutions aren’t written on paper—they’re walked on trails. Whether you’re chasing a Master Hiker certificate or just looking for a fresh start, Virginia State Parks offer the perfect backdrop for your journey. Every step is a story, and every trail is an opportunity to connect—with nature, with loved ones, and with yourself.
